will we write an short test tomorrow?

Here is another question:

If a sentence is in the past perfect, how do I backshift them? Or is there no backshift?

Well, trendy Andy

I can answer at least one of your questions.

Once you have backshifted a sentence into past perfect you have reached the end of the road, so to speak.

There is no further backshift possible.
Schoeni - 13. Jan, 15:38

andy..I think we did one in school an there was no backshift.is it right mr. K?

Mr. K. - 13. Jan, 15:41

Ah, you were faster than me.

And you are right, there is no backshift.

You earned one star: *
xaphan_andY - 13. Jan, 16:05

thanks, guys :D

But at the moment I do my homework!
And if I have a order I just have the normal backshift plus the strange order thing?
Am I right?

I don't know, how to build the reportet order sentence oO

Mr. K. - 13. Jan, 16:09

Do you mean the word order? If so then yes, it does not change.
xaphan_andY - 13. Jan, 16:17

is there no change?
I report the order just with the backshift?
Or is there something else?

Mr. K. - 13. Jan, 16:27

Right, you start your sentence with "Mr. K. said" (as an example) and go with the backshift.

However, when you want to report an order in the negative form:

"Don't do that!"

the word order changes to

"He told me NOT to do that!"
xaphan_andY - 13. Jan, 16:28

oh thanks mr. K
now I understand everything :D
now I feel better

homework

hey mr. k
i have a question. Can we corret the homework before the "test"? I´m very unsure about reporting orders and requests :(

is the order always in the infinitiv? example:
Diana: Could you help me with my CV, please, Harry?

=> Diana asked Harry ____to help______ her with her CV

is this always in the infinitiv? can I put it into the past? is it possible --had asked--- zu schreiben?

Mr. K. - 13. Jan, 21:29

Don't worry too much about orders and requests.

In your example the "asked" is the introducing verb i.e. it introduces the request. The consequence is that you have to put it into the simple past in this case.
